All About Gel Manicures

Nail polish is the corner stone of a manicure. With a huge catalog of designs to choose from, nail salons are all women’s refuge for healthy glowing nails and hands. However, the traditional nail polish has always been slightly inconvenient due to the easy chipping of the polish within a week after the manicure. Gel manicures are slowly transforming the manicures with their ability to resist chipping of the polish and thereby lasting longer.

Today, gel manicures are available in many salons as women opt for it due to its advantages. However, if you are planning to get your nails done with the gel nail polish, there are some things that you need to be aware of before taking an appointment at the nail salon. Here we have answered some important doubts that people have to know about a gel manicure. We hope this answers most of your queries.

WHAT IS A GEL MANICURE?

The gel manicure involves using nail polish that is basically a gel. It uses a LED lamp or UV rays to dry (cure) the nail polish. During the procedure, 2-3 base coats of the polish are applied which is later covered with a top coat. All the coats are to be dried under a LED lamp or with UV rays. Once this is done, an inhibition layer is wiped out with alcohol. Once it has dried, it wouldn’t smudge or chip for a long time.

HOW IS GEL MANICURE DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR TONES?

Gel manicure has a shiny luster and is different from the regular nail colors. It lasts up to two weeks without chipping. The gel manicure is completely non-porous and odor-free. Since it lasts longer than the regular polish, it saves you money and time as you wouldn’t have to visit the nail salon frequently. The gel nail polish usually comes in opaque bottles, unlike the regular ones in transparent containers, so as to prevent it from curing in the bottle with exposure to sunlight or UV light.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A GEL MANICURE?

The most obvious plus point of the gel manicure is its ability to resist chipping. Unlike the normal manicure, a gel manicure can last for 2-5 weeks. However, this depends upon the rate of your nail growth and the wear and tear of your nails. The gel manicure is also essentially non-porous. This means that it does not absorb moisture from the atmosphere into your nails, unlike the normal one. As a result, it remains intact for a long time and protects your nail bed.

ARE GEL MANICURES HARMFUL TO THE NAILS?

Gel manicures are not harmful to nails because nail themselves are the dead parts of our body. The harm comes from the removing process. The manicure can harm your nail bed if you scratch or scrape it with a tool. However, since your nail bed and cuticles are living things, you need to protect them. Removing your gel polish yourself in rough ways can harm both your cuticles and the nail bed. We recommend you to get it removed at a salon so avoid the risk of damage.

Many people also have apprehensions of using it because of the usage of UV rays to cure it. These apprehensions are not completely false. Many salons prefer to cure the nail polish under the LED light so as to eliminate the risk of skin cancer. Some studies have also found that the UV rays can alter the DNA of the skin which can lead to cancer. Thankfully the gel manicure industry is improving as many salons are using the LED light to cure the nail polish. Besides you can protect your nails from the harm of UV rays by applying sunscreen before exposing your hands to such rays.

HOW TO REMOVE GEL MANICURE?

The best removal of the nail polish can be done only at the salon. Although it is expensive, costing about $ 15- 20 per session, it saves your nails from harm. However, you can get it done at home itself if you take appropriate care and precaution. You can buy a gel remover or pure acetone for the process. Dip a ball of cotton in any of the solution and cover your nails with it. Again cover this with aluminum foil and then with a cloth to fasten the removal process. It can take from a quarter of an hour to an hour depending on the brand of gel you use. After this, moisturize your nails and use a cuticle oil to keep them healthy.
