7 Tips to Keep Your Feet Healthy

Your feet have many crucial functions in the body. It helps in movement and supports the entire body weight. Toenails prevent damage to the fingers during motion. Therefore we cannot deny that we should give adequate care to the feet. However, the care demanded your feet are quite different from that of your hands. Hands, unlike the feet, are not exposed to rough surroundings like ground or soil and are safe from problems like corns and calluses. But feet are prone to these issues. Treating your feet with some TLC is hence necessary.

1) Smoothen the skin

Exposure to rough surfaces that leads to friction creates calluses and corns in your feet. These will roughen the skin and make it look unhealthy and unclean. When coupled with a lack of moisture, these corns and calluses can make your feet appear messy. Exfoliating the skin is, therefore, a must. Exfoliation removes the dead skin and grinds down the corns and calluses in your feet. It smoothens the skin, turning it soft and supple to touch.

Soak your feet in a basin filled with warm water. You can add a few drops of lemon or honey for better results. After 10-15 minutes, your skin will be softened. Now, use a pumice stone to rub the dead skin off your feet. Once this is done, your skin will appear fresh and clear. Apply a moisturizer such as shea butter or cocoa butter after the process. This will help your skin to retain the moisture.

2) Wear Sunscreen on Your Feet

Have you ever had light patches of skin on your foot that resembles the silhouette of your flip flops and sandals? If yes, your feet are being exposed to the sun too much. Apply sunscreen on your feet every time you step out in open footwear. Sunscreens are must especially for summer or a beach holiday. Choose your sunscreen wisely; a sunscreen with SPF 30 would the job of protecting your feet pretty well.

3) Get a Pedicure Regularly

A pedicure is not just about beautiful nail décor. It has enormous health significance. A nail technician cleans the dirt trapped in your nails, exfoliates your skin and moisturizes your skin to achieve the perfection to your feet. This is followed by decorating it with nail polish and the designs of your choice.

Getting a pedicure every three weeks is a healthy habit. Do not give up on pedicures during winter as many women do. Your feet require care at all times in the year. In the winter, your feet have very little moisture and this can affect the health of your skin in the feet. Therefore get regular pedicure be it summer, winter or autumn. Your feet deserve to be treated with care!

4) Trim Your Nails Properly

Improper trimming of toe nails can lead to many painful conditions. Among this, an ingrown toe nail is the most common. These mainly occur in the biggest toenail. Ingrown toenails occur when you cut more part of the nails in the corners of your toenails. Always cut in a straight fashion. It will prevent the occurrence of an ingrown toe nail.

You should also choose your footwear wisely. Improper footwear that leaves no space for your toes too can cause an ingrown toenail. Choose comfort over style when you shop for footwear. Continuous wearing of tiny shoes and high heels can affect the health of your feet, in the long run, leading to problems like a backache and athlete foot.

5) Keep your feet warm

In winter, the extreme temperature accompanied with the lack of moisture can cause winter dryness in your feet. Another problem is the frostbite which can cause permanent damage to the blood vessels. Freezing of tissues is not good for the health of your skin and musles.

Wear protective socks all the time in winter. Avoid walking barefoot on the cold floor. Warm foot baths are greatly refreshing during the cold season. You can also massage your feet regularly during winter to improve the blood circulation in the feet. This will provide warmth to the feet as well.

6) Seek Help from a Podiatrist for Foot Complications

If your skin in the feet have problems that you can’t treat yourself, you should consult a podiatrist. A podiatrist is trained to understand the feet better than anyone else and they help to diagnose the conditions (if any) in your feet.

An appointment at a podiatrist is a good idea for those women who have diabetes and cannot get a pedicure at a nail salon. A podiatrist will do your procedure with utmost care so as not to cause any issues with your pedicure later.

7) Protect Your Feet From Fungus and Bacteria

Fungal and bacterial infection can ruin the beauty of your nails permanently. Always keep your feet clean. Never let dirt accumulate in your toenails. Never cut your cuticles as these open up an easy route for the bacteria and fungus to reach your nail bed, causing infections. If your nails are infected with bacteria or fungus, seek professional help

When choosing the cosmetics and nail polishes, pick the less harsh ones. Exposure to chemicals isn’t good for your feet either. Switch to organic oils, if you are sensitive to lotions that contain chemicals. You can replace these with coconut oil and tea tree oil.

A healthy feet is indeed a pleasant sight in itself. The aesthetic of owning beautiful and healthy feet is enough to make any woman smile at her feet. However, this requires a little bit of effort from your side. Take care of your feet as if they are your babies. Pamper them with massages, lotions and sunscreens. Cover them with a fresh pair of socks in the winter to protect it from the cold. Let them free in the beach waves.
